Training - Apprenticeship

The New England Carpenters Union offers a 4-year apprenticeship program created to thoroughly develop the talents and skills of up-and-coming carpenters. The carpenters union is home to several carpentry trades including general carpentry, piledriving, floorcovering, shop and millworking, and so on. To learn more about these affiliated trades, click here. Like other institutions of advanced learning, students may choose the trade they'd like to study.

The apprenticeship program is a combination of classroom learning and job site employment. Apprentices attend classes for 1 week every 3 months, a system designed to accommodate the needs of contractors and apprentices alike. Apprentices will receive a minimum of 160 hours of work on a job site per year. As a result, apprentices are continuously building upon their knowledge and skill base while solidifying these learnings in a practical job site setting.

The program allows carpenter apprentices to earn wages and benefits that enable them to provide for themselves and their families, while learning from the most experienced professionals in both environments. Typically, apprentices start around 50% or higher of the journey worker pay scale. As their training progresses, apprentices earn more until they become full carpenters, called "journeymen," and are then paid at the journeymen rate. To find out more information about becoming an apprentice or to apply for admittance to an apprenticeship program, contact a training center in your geographic area.
